(Minghui.org) Ms. Li Junzhi’s family was overjoyed when her grandson was admitted to a military academy in July 2021. The school, however, withdrew their offer after discovering in a “political background review” that Ms. Li is a Falun Gong practitioner.
Since the Chinese Communist Party started the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, it has not only attacked Falun Gong practitioners, but also implicated their family members, who are often barred from joining the military or becoming public servants, both of which are considered stable and high-level jobs in China.
The police also ransacked the home of Ms. Li’s son and confiscated two Falun Gong books she left there. Her son, daughter-in-law, and grandson were terrified and distressed.
The series of events left Ms. Li worried and anxious. The 70-year-old Yueyang City, Hunan Province resident suddenly suffered a heart attack and died on July 27, 2021.
Prior to her tragic death, Ms. Li had been arrested several times for practicing Falun Gong.
She was first arrested on July 31, 2011 after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. She was detained at the Hubin Lockup.
Ms. Li was arrested again at home on April 11, 2017. None of the police officers showed their IDs. She was dragged downstairs and pushed into the police car. One officer hit her on the back. She was taken to a brainwashing center and held there for 15 days.
When Ms. Li’s daughter learned about her arrest that afternoon, she went around town, to the residential committee office, the police station, a local lockup, and another brainwashing center, looking for her. In the end, she found that Ms. Li had been arrested by officers from the Lou District Domestic Security Office. When she went there to demand her release, the officers rejected her and refused to tell her Ms. Li’s detention location. Her daughter burst into tears right then.
At the brainwashing center, the authorities arranged two people to monitor Ms. Li around the clock, and forbade her from doing the Falun Gong exercises. Tang Jianmin of the Lou District Domestic Security Office and Peng of the Changsha City 610 Office forced her to watch videos smearing Falun Gong, and also gave lectures to brainwash her. She was released two weeks later, on April 26, after being forced to sign statements renouncing Falun Gong.
Shortly after she returned home on July 6, 2017, Tang and six other officers harassed Ms. Li at home. She didn’t cooperate and urged the officers not to participate in the persecution. When she started to talk about how she suffered from several medical conditions after being released from the brainwashing center, the police immediately left.
