(Minghui.org) When Mr. Miao Fu was released after serving seven years for his faith in Falun Gong, he was in very poor health and often in a delirious state. The Mudanjiang City, Heilongjiang Province resident went to his brother’s home in late December 2020 and went missing three days later after going out. His family posted missing person notices around town and also reported his disappearance to the police, but to no avail. With the ongoing forced organ harvesting of Falun Gong practitioners in China, his family is very worried about his safety.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Below is the past persecution of Mr. Miao.
Arrest
Mr. Miao was arrested on February 2, 2012, while accompanying the families of seven detained Falun Gong practitioners to the local police station to seek their release.
That night, the police ransacked Mr. Miao’s apartment and confiscated his personal belongings, including a computer, printer and cellphone. His 70-year-old mother was frightened.
For the next seven days, Mr. Miao was detained in the interrogation room of the Dongning County Police Department. He refused to answer the officers’ questions and was beaten, slapped in the face, and deprived of sleep. His teeth were loosened, and he suffered brain damage and severe memory loss.
Mental Condition Induced by Torture in a Detention Center
Mr. Miao was taken to a detention center and held in cell number 5. A guard surnamed Li instructed inmates to bring him to an office. The inmates held him on the ground and beat his back with a hard plastic tube until it was broken. Mr. Miao’s left kidney was injured, and he couldn’t straighten his back for years.
Another time, three inmates handcuffed and shackled Mr. Miao and beat him. He was injured so badly that he couldn’t lie down on his back.

In April 2012, Mr. Miao was confined to a bed for five days and not allowed to go to the bathroom. The inmates stripped off his clothes and kept the window wide open when the weather was still very chilly. Inmate Zhou Jianquan wrapped his fist with a dry towel and punched Mr. Miao in his left rib cage until a rib was broken. Another inmate used a wet towel dipped with salt to rub Mr. Miao’s back with force. The extreme pain pushed Mr. Miao beyond his limit. Inmates Yang Yajun, Guo Juncheng, and Li Ming also dragged Mr. Miao into the bathroom and beat him, breaking one of his left canine teeth and right ribs.
When Mr. Miao’s lawyer Wang Quanzhang later visited him, he had been totally disfigured by the torture. He was in a trance and stared at people with dull eyes. He talked incoherently and couldn’t answer any questions, but only repeated, “Sue him, sue him.”
Family Deprived of Right to Appeal
On June 27, 2012, Mr. Miao stood trial in Dongning Court. He appeared confused and disoriented during the session. He was emaciated and looked much older than his actual age. He had scars and bruises on his arms and face and had difficulty standing and walking. His voice was very low and he could not remember much, except that the ex-state security captain Lin Xiaowei had hit his head.
With a low energy level, he even fell asleep during the court session, as well as before the court session when his lawyer was talking to him. It is unclear if it was because he had been deprived of sleep for a long time or if he was given toxic drugs (a common form of torture inflicted on Falun Gong practitioners in custody). However, it is certain that he had a serious mental condition.
Given Mr. Miao’s condition and the fact that he was tortured to extract a confession, his lawyer Wang Quanzhang asked the court to exclude the illegal evidence obtained by the police under duress. However, judge Wang Chuanfa rejected the lawyer’s request, saying that he didn’t know how to start the illegal evidence exclusion procedure himself.
On August 9, the judge sentenced Mr. Miao to seven years and refused to provide a copy of the verdict to his family, which they needed in order to appeal the sentence. “You aren’t eligible to appeal,” the judge said.
Lawyer Wang Quanzhang sued Judge Wang. When the judge happened to see the lawyer at the detention center on August 31, he beat the lawyer and yelled, “I won’t let you see Miao Fu. I tore up his appeal letter!” The judge also called himself a “bandit” and said he had taken a million-yuan bribe from someone.
Repeatedly Beaten in Prison, Suffering Heart Failure
Mr. Miao was taken to Mudanjiang Prison to serve time. As his family wasn’t allowed to visit him, they learned about his situation from inmates released from the prison, who told them that Mr. Miao was repeatedly beaten and put in solitary confinement for refusing to renounce his faith.
2012
Mr. Miao was taken to the No.17 Division of the prison in December 2012. The chief of team one, Wang Weijiang, shocked him with electric batons and instructed inmates Qin Xilong, Cheng Guitao, and Yuan Changfu to take turns preventing Mr. Miao from sleeping. One night they pushed Mr. Miao into the bathroom, beat him, and poured cold water on him. Inmate Guo Zhenjiang broke one of Mr. Miao’s incisors. Zhao Chunqiang repeatedly beat Mr. Miao and extorted 100 yuan out of him.
Later Mr. Miao was transferred to No.13 Division. One day when Mr. Miao refused to do forced labor and did the Falun Gong exercises in the cell, guard Zhang Xiaodong dragged him to the division director’s office. Two guards, Zhu Zhijun and Guo Qipeng, shocked him with electric batons before sending him to solitary confinement.
2015
Starting on December 1, 2015, the No. 11 division director Du Gang and the associate director Bi Haibo instructed inmates including Yang Jinguo to continuously torture Mr. Miao for eight days in a row. Mr. Miao lost two teeth and was taken to the prison hospital several times because of heart failure.
Zhao Chunqiang repeatedly slapped Mr. Miao in the face, beat and shocked him with a high-voltage electric baton on his neck and sensitive areas. Mr. Miao’s neck and chest were covered with blisters, and both of his nipples were black.
To prevent Mr. Miao from shouting “Falun Dafa is good,” Zhao instructed Yang Jinguo to stuff his mouth with rags and tape it. After a round of beating, they stripped his clothes and poured cold water on him, with the window wide open when the temperature was -4 Fahrenheit. For the next seven days, Mr. Miao was not allowed to sleep. As soon as he closed his eye, he would be beaten. Mr. Miao lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital for resuscitation. When people asked about Mr. Miao’s situation, Yang claimed that he had a mental illness.
2017
On November 13, 2017, Mr. Miao was beaten again for trying to do the Falun Gong exercises in the prison workshop. His forehead and left eye were injured.
Nine days later, Mr. Miao’s brother visited him in the prison. When he saw Mr. Miao’s face full of bruises, he asked him what had happened to his face. As soon as Mr. Miao said he was beaten, the guards took him away and ended the visitation.
Guard Fu Zhanjun once hit Mr. Miao’s head and caused it to bleed. Another time, Fu and a few other inmates forcibly poured mustard oil into Mr. Miao’s nostrils. He also jabbed Mr. Miao’s inner thigh and left the tips of the needles in him. Some needle tips went into his body and caused extreme pain when it moved with the blood. It was reported that Mr. Miao was also injected with an unknown drug by Fu.
In addition to the above torture, the guards also forbade Mr. Miao from wearing a warm jacket during the three winters between 2015 and 2017.
2018
In 2018, Mr. Miao was punished by sitting on a tiger bench many times for doing Falun Gong exercises. To prevent him from shouting “Falun Dafa is good,” the guards and inmates stuffed his mouth with socks and taped it shut. Guards Yang Zhiyong and Feng Songyan repeatedly sprayed pepper water on Mr. Miao’s face. Feng also shocked his legs with a long club with a curved head that could discharge electricity. Mr. Miao was also locked in a room with no bed or chair for many days.
When Mr. Miao was released in February 2019, after seven years of torture, he was not only in poor health but also often in a delirious state. Sometimes he didn’t eat or drink for several days. Sometimes he made phone calls in the middle of the night or ran outside, saying that someone was looking for him.
