(Minghui.org) I began to practice Falun Dafa 22 years ago. I am a senior citizen and a farmer from the countryside of Northeast China. Practicing Falun Dafa has opened up my wisdom and made me change my notions. Now I am more compassionate and selfless.
Through my Falun Dafa practice, my view of the world changed completely. When others infringed upon me and treated me unfairly, I was not affected. I would like to share some of my stories.
I live in a village, not far from the city. Every summer and fall I take rice and vegetables to the city to sell at a farmers market. I do this every year and have been talking to my customers about Falun Dafa. Many know me well as the “senior Falun Dafa practitioner.”
Over the years, many people have accidentally overpaid me at the market. I always chase them down and return their money. Often customers have accidentally left their belongings at my stand, such as umbrellas, purses, and clothes. I hang on to these items for them until they return, even if it takes many days.
Last summer I sold a cucumber to a middle-aged woman who said she would come back for it a little bit later. When the market was closing up for the day, she still had not returned. I kept waiting. The man in the next stall told me to go home, but I insisted on waiting a while longer. Finally, I had to leave.
I did not have anything to sell the next day, but returned to the market to look for the lady who purchased the cucumber. She still never returned. I continued to come to the market every day and even purchased fresh cucumbers for her. She finally showed up on the third day.
My stall neighbor told her, “Look what he did for you. He came every day with a fresh cucumber just for you.” She saw the fresh cucumber, and was pleased.
She thanked me and we chatted a bit. She asked me about my beliefs. I told her I practiced Falun Dafa and Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. For me to keep my word and be ethical is our basis for being a good person, I said. She wondered who really cared about those things anymore. Only a fool, she said.
“Because I am a good person, you get your cucumber back,” I said. “You thanked me. It is enough to prove that for one to value ethics and hold oneself against the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is right. How can you call people like that foolish?”
“I understand what you are saying,” she said. “I am sorry. Thank you!”
One cold winter day, another elderly couple came to the market to sell apples. They were late and could not find a good spot. I was leaving early that day, so I told them if they waited for me to pack up my things, they could have my spot. They took me up on my offer and wanted to give me a bag of apples in return. I declined and explained that as a Falun Dafa practitioner, and I would not take anything I had not paid for.
“Such a kind person—please take it,” they said. “Before today we did not like Falun Dafa. We were misled by the media. Now we have a greater understanding and appreciation for it.”
I told them that many people had been misled by the communist party's lies, which was the reason why we were risking our lives to tell people the facts about Falun Dafa. I also told their teenaged granddaughter to remember that “Falun Dafa is good, Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is good.” She assured me that she would.
The people I meet at the market are people I believe I am supposed to meet as a Dafa practitioner. The quality of my vegetables and rice is good. I am always generous with my customers. Those who cannot pay get my produce for free. They remember my kindness and tell their friends and family to come to my stall. Everyone says my vegetables and rice are delicious. I tell them I do not use chemical fertilizers so that my produce is the very best for people.
“Because of my good heart,” I’ve said, “my rice and vegetables grow well, and they are better than others. The feedback from you verifies what I just said. You are fortunate to purchase crops from a practitioner and to learn the truth about Falun Dafa.”
When a neighbor occupied a parcel of my land and would not return it to me, I soon realized it must have something to do with my cultivation state.
For one to endure hardships and give away personal interest doesn't mean that one is incompetent, but rather it’s the way that one's realm manifests. When my relatives, friends, and other neighbors saw this unfair treatment from my neighbor, they suggested I take legal action. I said to them that taking legal means could judge the right and wrong on the surface, yet it may cause the conflict to become even bigger. It may have to do with what I owed others in my previous lives. If I could pay back the debt like this, the conflict could be resolved forever.
I realized that only by letting go of ego could our lives be more valuable. We are truly the most fortunate ones in the world.
