(Minghui.org) Ms. You Xiuying, 73, is a Falun Gong practitioner in Shanghai. She was arrested on August 26, 2016, from her home and sentenced to one year in prison for practicing Falun Gong. As her release date approaches, her family was told that the local 610 Office plans to transfer her from the prison to the brainwashing center because she refuses to renounce her belief in Falun Gong.
The official name of the brainwashing center is Shanghai Legal Education School. It is located within the Shanghai Police Bureau Training Complex. Outside the building, a sign reads “751 Police Activity Center.” The head of the school is the former director of the Shanghai forced labor camp, Jiang Qiqiong.
Shanghai Legal Education School is under the administration of the 610 Office, an extra-legal agency tasked with eradicating Falun Gong and given the power to override the judicial system.
In the past, the brainwashing staff were temporary workers with a two-month contract. Their tactics were simple and direct, such as forcing detainees to watch slanderous videos and write thought reports.
There have been changes in recent years. The staff has become more specialized, some with backgrounds in psychology and the brainwashing methods are more personalized.
As least five other Falun Gong practitioners have been sent to the brainwashing center this year.
1. Tang Chanqiu was sent to the brainwashing center in February.2. Xu Longqin was arrested on March 3 and sent to the brainwashing center on March 8.3. Zhu Jiqin was arrested on May 13 and taken to the brainwashing center ten days later.4. Qian Jianying was sent to the brainwashing center after serving a 2-year prison term.5. Ying Yu was sent to the brainwashing center for 30 days after being arrested on April 18. Ying returned home on July 25.
Ms. Zhou Meijuan was arrested on July 11 and detained. Three weeks later, officials pressured her family to agree to have her sent to the brainwashing center, and the family refused. Ms. Zhou returned home on August 10.
