(Minghui.org) A Beijing woman was sentenced to six months in prison after her husband was coerced into testifying against her.
Ms. Yu Fulan was home on May 10, 2017 when two agents showed up unexpectedly to conduct a “welfare check.” Wang Weidong, Head of Security of the local Fengtai Village, and officer Zhao Yidong of Nandulehe Police Station, called in extra help when they found Falun Gong materials in Ms. Yu’s home.
Ms. Yu was soon taken away and sent to Pinggu Detention Center. This is not the first time that the 50-year-old woman has been targeted for refusing to renounce Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline being persecuted by the Chinese communist regime. She was arrested twice in 2000 and once in 2006. The local police came for her again in 2008 and gave her two years of forced labor on August 28 of that year.
Ms. Yu appeared in court on September 19, 2017 following her latest arrest. Her husband was deceived into testifying against her, but her daughter stood by her. Her lawyer also defended her constitutional right to freedom of belief, as no law in China criminalizes Falun Gong.
Prosecutor Liao Lu alleged that the Falun Gong materials confiscated from Ms. Yu’s home constituted illegal propaganda items. Liao also claimed that both police and Beijing Tongdashoucheng Judicial Verification Center (a private business) confirmed the authenticity and admissibility of the prosecution evidence.
Judge Sun Guoli sentenced Ms. Yu to six months and fined her 2,000 yuan on September 30.
