The Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company finished on a high note at its final performance at Sydney's Big Top Theatre at Luna Park on May 19.
According to the Shen Yun, website, the New York-based performance company "seeks to breathe new life into traditional Chinese culture while providing audiences everywhere with an experience of sublime beauty."
The word, "Beautiful" was heard coming from Sydney audiences throughout the week, a noteworthy crowd that included fashion designers, artists, singers, state government dignitaries and business people.
"I think it's fantastic, the colours, the music and the costumes, they are beautiful," said Nicola Finetti, one of Australia's top fashion designers.
"Beautiful dance, lots of colours, vibrant," said Jessica Ross a photographer who caught Shen Yun on the final night.
Dance teachers and their students noticed the skill of Shen Yun dancers.
"The dances have been beautiful," said Ann Bowen, a dance teacher from the Dance North Academy.
"You can see the tip of the hand and the feet are so graceful," said former professional dancer Ms. Low.
Among the performers in Shen Yun are a number of opera singers, classically trained in the Western tradition, who sing from the heart their deepest convictions.
Ms. Alex Robertson, an opera singer and vocal artist manager saw Shen Yun early in the week and said she would be telling her colleagues to come and see the show. The talent she said was "God given."
"The Shen Yun singers were exceptional beyond technique," she said. "They all tend to have a lot of inner peace and I think that they express that."
Khan Dawson a former opera singer with the Australian Opera who now instructs in vocals, also saw Shen Yun on their last night in Sydney. He was full of praise for the singers and the musicians.
"The singing was wonderful, absolutely wonderful; I enjoyed all three singers very much. The piano player, the accompanist, she deserves the applause on her own, she was wonderful, a lovely player, lovely very sympathetic player," he said.
This year, for the first time, Sydney audiences were treated to the full Shen Yun New York Company Orchestra. They appreciated the unique combination of Chinese and Western classical instruments, many saying they were torn between watching the dancing and watching the orchestra.
Among the audience through the week were a number of Members of Parliament, including Don Page, State MP for Ballina.
The grandson of Earle Page, a former Prime Minister of Australia, Mr. Page's experience as a statesman gave him a good background to appreciate Shen Yun.
