Torture victim Zhen Wang is leaving St. Vincent's Hospital in Brakel (Höxter County). Both of his hips were broken in a Chinese labor camp.
The mechanical engineer was arrested in 2001 because he is a follower of the Falun Gong practice. He was taken to a labor camp for "re-education."
"After it became clear to them that I wasn't willing to renounce Falun Gong or to write statements against the meditative practice that adheres to Truth, Compassion, and Tolerance, they tortured me," he recalled.
Other prisoners forced him to crouch down and stretched his legs, pressing them into the ground in such a way that both of his hips were broken and joints and tendons snapped. Later, Wang was able to move only painfully and with the help of crutches.
The operating surgeon, Dr. Rolf Haaker, chief of the Department of Orthopedics said: "These vicious tortures combined with additional brutal treatment in the forced labor camp caused serious damage that could only be alleviated by replacing the two hip joints with prosthesis."
Wang, who escaped imprisonment in 2003 and has been living in Bielefeld with his wife since 2006, has other serious allegations against the communist regime and its disdain for human rights. He is certain that prisoners are taken from the Chinese labor camps to have their organs harvested. He claims that the appropriate blood tests were done on him as well.
He had his first hip replacement surgery in Brakel in 2006. Insurance paid the cost.
