Former secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission of Dongfeng Automobile Company, Ms. Zhang Shoufeng, was an honest official. For the past eight years, she has been subjected to persecution, illegal detention, and forced brainwashing for her belief in Falun Dafa and "Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance." In mid-November 2003, Ms. Zhang was illegally sentenced to five years in prison. She is still
Zhejiang Women's Prison uses criminal inmates to persecute practitioners. Heinous criminals, who are serving long sentences with little chance of reprieve, work to force every practitioner there to "transform." The prison employs a system of points as an incentive to the criminals. Points are more important than money in prison, because they are used to determine time deducted from sentences. For every practitioner successfully "transformed," the criminals are given 10 to 12 points. These so-called merits are recorded and the inmates are rewarded by allowing them to tour the famous West Lake in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province. Tempted by sentence reductions and instigated by those in charge, criminal inmates are actively employed to persecute practitioners.
In November 2000, Ms. Zhang and two other practitioners went to Tiananmen Square in Beijing to unfold a banner that read "Dafa Dafa Is Good." They were arrested and escorted to the First Detention Center in Shiyan City, where they were forced to attend brainwashing and "transformation" sessions for two months. Seeing that Ms. Zhang was still firm with her belief, the police transferred her to the Second Detention Center another month. She still was not "transformed," so the police again transferred her, this time to the "Class of Law Education," where she was severely persecuted until May
In September 2001, Captain of the Fifth Branch Police Force Zhi Jun, someone with the last name Luo, and another eight police officers broke into Ms. Zhang's home and seized her. They took her to the branch police station, where she was tormented for seven days and nights and subjected to sleep deprivation. Seeing that they couldn't "transform" her, they again took her to the First Detention Center of Shiyan for another 40 days. At the end of November, Ms. Zhang fled from the center in the middle of the night and became homeless.
In February 2003, Ms. Zhang and her husband went to work in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province. While she was posting truth-clarification materials on the streets, she was seen, followed, and arrested by five police officers. She didn't cooperate with them or tell them her name or address. They secretly took a picture of her and went around to different companies to identify her employer. Her home was also ransacked. The police even lured her parents, who were both more than 80 years old, to Wenzhou City to attempt to break her resolve. Seeing that she didn't compromise and give up her belief, and that their conspiracy didn't succeed, the police didn't allow the elderly couple to see their daughter. The two grieved so much over their daughter that
In November 2003, due to the manipulation of the court by the CCP, Ms. Zhang was "illegally sentenced" to five years in prison. On April 7, 2004, she was taken to Zhejiang Women's Prison, where four criminal inmates tried to "transform" her. Two out of the four followed her day and night. Under the manipulation and incentive of the police, the other inmates succeeded in forcing Ms. Zhang to write a guarantee statement to stop practicing Falun Dafa. The police also established a set of methods to deal with the criminals such as "mutual supervision." Two criminals had to keep eyes on practitioners 24 hours a day. If they didn't do a good job, points would be deducted.
Since May of 2004, a new set of tricks were implemented to launch a new round of persecution. Those practitioners that were not "transformed" were locked in a separate room. A team consisting of 6 to 10 trained criminals was set up to persecute practitioners. The watchman of the team couldn't sleep; her job was to make sure practitioners didn't fall asleep or go to the bathroom. (They were allowed to urinate or defecate only in their rooms.) During the hot summer, mosquito nets were not allowed to be installed nor were fans. Nor were they allowed to take baths or change clothes. Only a few liters of water were given to each practitioner to clean her rice bowls and wash out her mouth. They forced practitioners to sit all day long in an upright posture. It is very difficult for people to maintain that position for 24 hours a day. Ms. Zhang was tortured like this for more than three months, and her blood pressure reached 200.
Ms. Zhang remains in Zhejiang Women's Prison. The severe conditions under which other Dafa practitioners are detained and tortured in women's prisons are still not fully known.
