December 13th 2006
The Falun Gong task force opened International Human Rights Day on Sunday December 10th, 2006 with the showing of a movie. First, Dr. Reinhold Kiehl, a member of the "World Organization to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong" talked in detail about human rights violations in China. He also spoke of the suppression, persecution and genocide of Tibetans, the persecution of Christians, as well as of the suppression and persecution of Falun Gong practitioners by the Chinese Communist Party.
After this introduction, the Canadian movie Sandstorm in the Chinese language with German subtitles was shown. This movie tells the story of a policeman who actively participates in the persecution of Falun Gong. He was locked into his apartment during a severe sandstorm. He had to attend to his dying wife who could not get her medication due to the severe weather.
Both worry about their daughter. Water and food became scarce. During the painful experience, the policeman is troubled by a bad conscience. Remembrances of the torture of a Falun Gong practitioner do not give him any peace. At the end of the movie he gets a call from his daughter whose life was saved by a Falun Gong practitioner.
Canadian actor and Director Michael Mahonen said that he made this movie to expose the truth of the persecution of Falun Gong in China in a form he is familiar with, and which can only be done with a new movie.
Utz-Römer from the International Society for Human Rights asked at the end of the event for all attendees to please sign a petition that addresses special cases of the persecution in China. He singled out the arrest of the Christian lawyer Gao Zhisheng who has been in detention since August 2006, because he represented Falun Gong practitioners. At the time of this article, his whereabouts are unknown.
