Mr. Ding Gangzi lived in Sanxiang No.7, Jiankang Street, Dong Street, Chengguan Town, Zanhuang County, Hebei Province. He made a living repairing bicycles. Mr. Ding started practicing Falun Gong in January 1997. After Jiang Zemin launched the persecution against Falun Gong in 1999, Mr. Ding was illegally detained several times and suffered brutal tortures. On June 10, 2001, Mr. Ding, age 47, passed away and left behind three daughters and a wife.
At the time of Mr. Ding's death, his youngest daughter Ding Xiaoxia was 19. His second daughter Ding Cuixia was 22. His oldest daughter was married. Because Mr. Ding had been the family's sole source of financial support, his death brought not only immense sorrow but also poverty. His wife and daughters have endured much hardship.
Mrs. Shi Ruizhen, Mr. Ding's wife, is now 51 years old does farm work. She lives in Chengguan Town, Zanhuang County, Hebei Province.
The youngest daughter Ding Xiaoxia is now 22 and attends the Nursing School in Handan City Medicine College.
Information on the Persecution of Ding Gangzi
In October 1999, Mr. Ding went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. He was illegally detained in the Zanhuang County Detention Center from December 16, 1999, to January 12, 2000. He was also fined 1500 yuan.
On May 10, 2000, the deputy director of the Public Security Bureau Qin Xinguo and the assistant chief of the police station Wang Jiezi saw Mr. Ding reading Zhuan Falun in his bicycle repair stall. Without a warrant, they searched Mr. Ding's home, confiscated Teacher's picture, and forced Mr. Ding to the local detention center. Mr. Ding was charged with "disrupting social order," detained for 19 days, and fined 80 yuan for so-called meal expenses.
In July 2000, the local authorities detained Mr. Ding in Chengguan Town for sevens days in a brainwashing class. From July 31 to August 26, Mr. Ding was held in a detention center and fined 210 yuan.
Under orders from the director of the Chengguan Police Station Feng Jianjun, Guo Jun, and others searched Mr. Ding's home again without a warrant. Although they did not find any Dafa material, they still detained Mr. Ding. On October 3, these officers "invited" Mr. Ding for a talk with the police station chief Qin Xinguo at Qin's house. However, the police vehicle carried Mr. Ding to the Zanhuang County Detention Center. Mr. Ding was tortured there for over eight months. Guards beat him with electric batons, forced him to kneel on angle iron, and handcuffed and shackled him in a painful position. Mr. Ding went on a hunger strike. Sadly, Mr. Ding passed away on June 10, 2001, at age 47.
When Mr. Ding was still alive, the authorities prohibited the family from visiting and failed to notify the family of Mr. Ding's death. A neighbor learned of his death and informed Mr. Ding's wife. The guards also prohibited the Ding family from examining the corpse. Wei Zhenhui of the Public Security Bureau attempted to settle this case outside of court with 25,000 yuan. If the Ding family did not accept this settlement, the body would be cremated after ten days anyway. Wei also told the Ding family that filing a lawsuit was futile. Mr. Ding's wife refused and filed a lawsuit. Later, Wei attempted to settle the case with 40,000 yuan.
Finally, Mr. Ding's wife got the right to examine her late husband's body. The scene was disconcerting: the skin near Mr. Ding's left eyelid was black, there was blood on his head and teeth, and his body was emaciated and badly disfigured.

According to the witnesses, Mr. Ding died on the evening of June 10, 2001, but the detention center claimed that Mr. Ding died in the emergency room at 8:00 a.m. on June 11.
