The central government has recently retracted all twenty-one secret orders issued this year regarding the persecution of Falun Gong. New orders are to be given orally. Jiang Zemin and his associates seem to be trying to keep open a path of retreat while making a desperate struggle. They appear to be distancing themselves from the responsibility of committing unforgivable crimes against Falun Dafa practitioners.
The Beijing Labor Committee has recently given orders to put practitioners working for the city government into a brainwashing class. They are using people who once practiced Falun Gong but have gone astray to spread their false understandings to practitioners. In the brainwashing class, they try to break the practitioners' righteous beliefs by involving them in a variety of activities and leaving them no time to think. Often several people surround one practitioner to give him lectures.
According to sources, this type of brainwashing class will spread to other
provinces, the first being Hebei Province. Some practitioners who are
municipal workers have already been sent to the brainwashing class.
At around 7:30 PM on July 21, a practitioner in Northern China was at home when policemen suddenly pounded at his door frantically. Seeing that nobody was opening the door, they tried to pry it open. The practitioner inside remained calm. He picked up his cell phone and called other practitioners, asking them to send out righteous thoughts together to eliminate the evil. After receiving his call, five practitioners sat down in the lotus position and sent forth righteous thoughts. Meanwhile, the practitioner climbed out of his apartment through the window and got to the ground by stepping on air-conditioners and shades mounted on the wall. The practitioner was discovered when he reached the ground, but he quickly hailed a cab and got away.
As the Fa-rectification progresses, the evil is putting up a final struggle, adding rapidly to the death toll of more than 250 practitioners. Many practitioners have realized that we should step up our efforts in clarifying the truth to the people and offering them salvation, thus assisting Teacher in this world. Many practitioners went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Dafa in July and came back safely. Recently, practitioners in a city in Northeast China have successfully held around twenty experience-sharing meetings, each with more than twenty participants. Many practitioners realize that as long as the evil has not been eliminated, more and more people will go to Tiananmen Square. We are committed to going there until all of the evil has been eliminated.
My name is Qi Lanqin. I am a male practitioner in Yuanshi County, Hebei Province. I have been detained many times since July of 1999, most recently on the evening of December 5, 2000. More than ten policemen broke into my home, led by Su Chunxu (the Director of the Politics and Security Office in the county), Liu Zhenfang, and Dong Wenyi (the local police chief). They searched my house but found nothing. Even so, they confiscated my motorcycle. My son tried to argue with them, and he was punched and kicked.
They took me to the county police department and forced me to spread my arms to the side, handcuffing them to two pipes outdoors. Six policemen took turns watching and torturing me. Their beatings and the cold made my legs become numb and swollen, and I lost feeling in my arm also. Later, I decided that I would not tolerate this and had to leave. I escaped at about midnight on December 8, 2000.
My wife was arrested last September for distributing flyers, and she is still detained, leaving my two children home alone. I cannot go home either, so my children are still unattended. The police have promised a 30,000 Yuan reward [Note: Yuan, Chinese dollar, the average monthly income of an urban worker is 500 Yuan.] for my arrest. They have been to my home many times to check for my presence.
The officials and police in Yuanshi County have been persecuting practitioners without restraint. Currently, there are still more than forty practitioners being held in the detention center. Some of them went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong, but most of them were deceived into going to the police station. The number of practitioners detained reached as high as eighty during the Chinese Lunar New Year period, and they were held without any legal documents. There are practitioners who have been detained ever since they went to Beijing to appeal in July of 2000. Their family members are not allowed to see them without approval from the Secretary of the Political and Legal Committee, Sun Chenyan. Though the police released some practitioners in April and May, they had to turn in a certain amount of money as bail. Some practitioners were sentenced to labor camp, such as Yan Zhilan (3 years), Yu Baoyi (2 years), and Xu Jincai (3 years). It is rumored that more practitioners will be sent to labor camps in the future.

Chinese News Net reported from Beijing that at around 10:30 AM on July 24, a fire started at the staff cafeteria located near the back entrance of Lanzhou University. The fire burned down over 500 square meters (approx. 5,400 square feet) of the building. The entire cafeteria was destroyed, leaving just a "skeleton" of the building.
The chief of the Fire Department in Lanzhou pointed out that Lanzhou University has had five such accidents already, and that they were not able to explain the cause of the fires.
Tan Xiaorong and other five Dafa practitioners of Lanzhou University are still being held at the Xiguoyuan Detention Center. It is speculated that they will either be sent to labor camp or prison. Wang Hongmei was detained by the University and sent to brainwashing classes. This has brought her parents, child and husband a great deal of stress and pain. We ask the Secretary and President of the University, police officers and other responsible parties to stop persecuting Dafa practitioners. Otherwise, retribution in the form of greater disasters could take place.
According to eyewitnesses, police arrested four more Dafa practitioners in Dehui at around 7:20 am on July 16, 2001. They confiscated one computer and one printer. In addition, these practitioners at the time carried individually 2,000 Yuan, 1,500 Yuan and around 800 Yuan in cash, mobile phones and pagers. No one knows these practitioners' whereabouts. There are indications that this arrest took place because one of the practitioners was followed.
Zhuo Ya, a female Dafa practitioner in Xinjiang, is an instructor at the Xinjiang Chinese Medicine Institute. She once walked through the Gobi Desert on foot, passed through the city of Wulumuqi and went on to Beijing to appeal. She has been arrested a number of times. Approximately six months ago, she was detained again and recently sentenced to three years in labor camp. Her family does not know her current whereabouts.
At around 5:00 AM on April 30, 2001, a Dafa practitioner and one of her family members from the Mingxingouli District were doing stretches in the backyard before breakfast. A policeman from the Huantong Police Sub-station spotted them. He accused the elderly woman of practicing Falun Gong exercises and took her away by force. She was sent to Changliu Detention Center for 15 days, after which the officials there demanded 3,000 Yuan from the practitioner before they would release her. The practitioner had no money to give. As a result, the Huantong Police Sub-station submitted a request to the Dongchan Public Security Bureau to sentence the elderly woman to one year in a labor camp. This elderly woman and a dozen other female practitioners from Tonghua were sent to the Heizhuizi Labor Camp in Changchun.
