The Central News Agency reported from Beijing that Xi'an City, the capital of Shanxi Province, has witnessed the severest and hottest summer seen in the last fifty years. Meteorological experts pointed out that it was the hottest summer for Xi'an since1951. The Xinhua News Agency also reported that the head of the Xi'an Meteorological Station said that average temperatures of the city in July had been the highest in the last fifty years. He also said that the temperature continued to be above 35 Celsius degrees and had lasted for 24 days from June 30 to July 23, which is almost unheard of in the last fifty years. On July 5, the highest temperature in the city reached 40 Celsius degrees. This was the hottest day in Xi'an since 1962.
The local meteorological authority predicted that there would be high temperatures over 35 Celsius degrees again in August, and the hot weather would continue for approximately 20 days.
