[Beijing] The Beijing police knew about the Tiananmen "self-immolation" event two days ahead of the time The four of us are Falun Gong practitioners from Changchun City, Jilin Province, and we went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. After we were arrested, the Beijing police interrogated us on the afternoon of January 21st. They tried to force us to tell them our names and addresses. When we refused, one policeman said, "Have you not heard about the Falun Gong practitioners setting themselves on fire on Tiananmen Square?" We replied, "No, we have not heard about that." Another police immediately joined in and said, "Don't talk about this yet." Everyone knows that the Tiananmen "self-immolation" took place in the afternoon of January 23rd. How could the Beijing police already know on January 21st that it would happen two days later? The slip made by the police clearly gives the secret away. [Beijing] A Beijing police -- "The Tiananmen self-immolation was a fabrication... It was designed to invoke ordinary citizens into attacking Falun Gong practitioners." A policeman in a certain Beijing district drove a friend home after having had too much to drink. While chatting with this friend, he said, "The Tiananmen self-immolation was a fabrication, and Jiang Zemin was the mastermind behind it. People inside the government planned the whole event and staged it on Tiananmen Square. The person who told me what had happened is an absolutely credible source of information. But what could I do? It was designed to provoke ordinary citizens into attacking Falun Gong practitioners. It is laughable how scared Jiang Zemin is of Falun Gong and dragged us into the mess as his sacrificial lambs. But in the end there is no way for a fire to be contained with paper. In this day and age, it feels so helpless to be a police officer." [Kaifeng City, Henan Province] The truth behind the "Million Signature Petition Drive against Falun Gong" in the city of Kaifeng On February 3rd, the city of Kaifeng sent out a decree to all local companies ordering them to bring their employees to Gutou Square at noon, so they could hold a rally against Falun Gong. Before the rally, every employee was forced to write an article attacking Falun Gong. This is how the government organized the "Million Signature Petition Drive against Falun Gong" in Kaifeng. [Changchun City, Jilin Province] Practitioner Wang Yan dies while in police custody under unknown circumstances Changchun practitioner Wang Yun used to live on Hongqi Street. After being repeatedly harassed by the police for practicing Falun Gong, he was forced to move somewhere else (his new address is unknown). He went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong before the Chinese New Year, and the police recently informed his family members that he had died in Beijing. Their claim is that he died jumping out of a car, but the actual circumstances surrounding his death are unknown at this time. [Northern China] Practitioners spread the message of Falun Gong to the local residents on Chinese New Year's Day On the morning of January 24th (the Chinese New Year's Day), many Falun Gong banners appeared next to all the major streets and inside residential neighborhoods in a certain northern Chinese city. The local residents were amazed to discover Falun Gong posters with messages such as "Falun Dafa is good, " "Truthfulness Benevolence Forbearance," "Jiang Zemin -- clear the name of Falun Gong," and "Jiang Zemin -- stop persecuting Falun Gong practitioners" on many power line poles and walls next to the major streets. Many local residents also received Falun Gong truth-clarifying flyers between January 26th and 29th. The local practitioners are using a variety of methods to tell the people the truth about Falun Gong. [Sichuan Province] The local authorities impose stiff punishments on the family members of practitioners According to sources inside of the Sichuan Province Police Commission (which was later independently verified by the Caojiagang Police Station), the police are planning to conduct a large-scale round-up of Sichuan practitioners on February 5th. Those who insist on practicing Falun Gong will be sentenced to long terms at the labor camps. In addition, Zhou Yongjian (the head of the Sichuan Province Communist Party and husband of the younger sister of Luo Gan, who is one of Jiang Zemin's major followers behind the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners) has personally taken over the local suppression efforts. He has announced the implementation of a new policy: "Anybody who has a parent or a child practicing Falun Gong will be laid off. Any retiree who has a child practicing Falun Gong will be denied any further pension payment." [Mainland China] The police plan to round up practitioners around February 9th According to sources inside of the Chinese Ministry of Public Security, the police are planning to round up a large number of Falun Gong practitioners around February 9th (15 days after the Chinese New Year Day). Practitioners are asked to do everything they can to protect Falun Gong books and truth-clarifying material and try not to be arrested and taken away easily. [Mulan County, Helongjiang Province] A local practitioner walks 3000 miles in 26 days to hold an appeal for Falun Gong on Tiananmen In April of 2000, Mr. Teng, a farmer in his 50s from Mulan County, Helongjiang Province, took his entire life savings of 30 Yuan (less than 4 dollars) and left his home for Beijing to tell the government that "Falun Dafa is good." Mr. Teng walked day and night, and he arrived on Tiananmen Square 26 days and 3000 miles later. Along the way, he wore out three pairs of hand-made shoes made of cloth. When he finally arrived in Beijing, it turned out that he had not spent a single penny and still had the same 30-Yuan on him. When he was arrested and sent back to his hometown, he took off his shoes and only then realized that his feet were covered with blisters. Just because he went to tell the government what he believed in from the bottom of his heart, he is being illegally detained by the "people's police." [Changchun City, Jilin Province] More than two thousand practitioners are being held at the Changchun Female Labor Camp Up until the Chinese New Year (January 24th), 1800 practitioners were being detained at the Heizuizi Female Labor Camp in Changchun. Recently, the labor camp has been taking in between 30 and 40 more practitioners everyday. In order to hold more practitioners, the labor camp has obtained a building from the Juvenile Detention Center and a building from a nearby factory. At this time, not counting those practitioners who have been released, more than 2000 practitioners are being detained at this labor camp. In China, even a medium-sized city has a number of such labor camps. From that, one could estimate how many practitioners are being detained in labor camps all over China. [Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province] The guards at the Xinjian Detention Center torture and abuse Falun Gong practitioners Practitioners, including Tao Fu, are being detained at the Xinjian Detention Center in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province. During their detention, they were brutally beaten and abused because they refused to give up Falun Gong. The guards did not beat the practitioners themselves, but they ordered 5 or 6 inmates to surround each practitioner to beat them. One inmate used a wooden bat (with a diameter of 5 cm or 1.5 inches) to hit the head of practitioner Tao Fu more than a hundred times. As a result, Tao Fu's head became completely swollen (the swelling was 2-3 cm or 1-inch thick) and covered with huge bruises. His face also became swollen that evening. After Tao Fu and other practitioners reported the fact that they were being beaten to officials from the city Justice Department, who had come to check up on them, these "officials" not only ignored the injuries of the practitioners, but they ordered the guards to be even tougher on them. After their visit, the practitioners were placed on strict surveillance around the clock. Other practitioners who are being detained include Zhang Wenzhou, Deng Yonghui, Xin Jianhua, Wang Xin, Wu Guohua, Li Jijia, Chen Yuquan, Luo Yunnan, among others. We urge the families of these practitioners and righteous people everywhere to look into the matter and work together to stop the brutality of the Xinjian Detention Center against Falun Gong practitioners. [Weihai County, Shandong Province] The authorities persecute Falun Gong practitioners Since July 20th of 1999, when Jiang Zemin began the persecution of Falun Gong, the Rushan Detention Center in Weihai County, Shandong Province has had practitioners in its custody at all times. The authorities have used a variety of methods to persecute the local practitioners, including beating them, hitting them with electric batons, force-feeding them with high-concentration salt water, imposing heavy fines, placing them under surveillance and ransacking their homes. Between October and November of 2000, the police arrested and detained 30 to 40 practitioners. One practitioner was sentenced to prison, while 12 other practitioners were sent to the labor camps. Anyone who was even remotely related to them was fined between 200-500 Yuan. Practitioner Cao Yuguo, male, 36, was laid-off from the Rushan Fruit Products Factory. He was arrested and sentenced to three years in prison for copying Minghui articles and trying to tell people the truth about Falun Gong. He was arrested in a Beijing hotel, where practitioners Jiang Ping (Cao's wife) and Ni Gaojian were arrested along with him (Ni was later sentenced to three years at the labor camps). After they brought Cao Yuguo back to Rushan, the police took off his clothes and shoes, handcuffed him outside in the corridor, and urged all the passers-by to humiliate him. They interrogated him everyday and routinely beat and tortured him. At the time of his arrest, Cao had more than 20, 000-Yuan in cash with him in the hotel room. The police not only confiscated the cash, but also took a copy machine, a motorcycle, three cell phones and another 9000 Yuan from his home. They then forced her elderly father to pay another 5000 Yuan to secure her release. Her father had to borrow the money and ended up paying a total of 14000 Yuan to the police. When Jiang Ping was finally released, her employer fired her. She was forced to take her son and go back to live with her parents. Cao Yuguo's parents, who are in their seventies, have been forced to stay with their daughter. Cao's home is now completely empty. During the October 1st (the Chinese National Day) period, the police took practitioner Li Duoji from his home without cause and sentenced him to three years at the labor camps. The reason they gave was that he had gone to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong at one time. The police told practitioner Song Xulong that since both he and his wife were Falun Gong practitioners, they had to send at least one of them to the labor camps. As a result, Song was sentenced to three years at the labor camps. Practitioner Gong Yunxiu, a farmer in her 50s, was arrested on her way to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. She was sentenced to three years at the labor camps. Practitioners who were sent to the labor camps for distributing Falun Gong material include:
Yu Min, female, 42
Duan Jiana, female, 42
Wang Aiqin, female, 42
Ni Gaojian, male, 27
Li Xiangrong, female, 34
Sui Xiangyun, male, 35
Huang Meihua, female, 25
Wang Zengchuan, male
Yu Shufeng, female, 49 [Beijing] The police arrest two retired Beijing University professors On January 11th, 2001, the police from the Beijing University Yanyuan Police Station arrested and took away Wang Suyun and Li Zhanji, who are retired professors from Beijing University, from their home around 11 o'clock in the morning. The police also ransacked their home, and no one has heard from them since then. [Liuan City, Anhui Province] The local detention center illegally detains several dozen Falun Gong practitioners Several dozen practitioners, including Gui Zuyao and Han Shouchun, are being detained in the Wangcheng Detention Center in the city of Liuan, Anhui Province. Many of them have been detained there for four to five months without any cause. [Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province] The police send local practitioners to prison under false pretenses According practitioners inside, more than 50 practitioners are being detained at the Majialong Police Station in the city of Nanchang and forced to attend a so-called "transformation class" there. The police lied to them and sent them there under false pretenses between January 14th and January 28th. [Wuhan City, Hubei Province] The authorities send another 38 practitioners to the labor camps On January 4th, 2001, the Wuhan Police Department sent 33 practitioners to the labor camps. On January 17th, the police sent another 5 practitioners to the labor camps. Those practitioners who were sent to the labor camps include: Yue Shunjiao, Yan Fuxiu, Wang Heyun, Hao Yuanying, a practitioner with the surname of Xiong, Xu Daoxiu, Li Zhixiu, Liu Fang, Zeng Lie, Wang Zhishun, Tang Yanhong, Yan Chen, Zhao Kelan, Li Daoyun, Liu Zhixin, Cai Fangming, Wan Ying, among others. [Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province] The police arrest a local practitioner under false pretenses Practitioner Liu Jinling went to visit the home of a fellow practitioner in the city of Guangzhou. When she got to the entrance to the apartment complex, the security guard lied to her. He told her that the practitioner that she was visiting had gone to pay her utility bill and volunteered to take Liu there. Liu believed the guard and went with him. Once they got there, she was promptly arrested and has been held at the Tianhe District Detention Center since then. The police had placed foot shackles on her, and her present condition is unknown. [Beijing] Brief reports from Beijing
- A Beijing policeman got into a taxi and started a conversation with the taxi driver. He said, "I am so irritated and annoyed. My supervisor has sent me to Tiananmen Square again to bring back Falun Gong practitioners. There are people on Tiananmen Square to hold appeals for Falun Gong every single day and I have to go there every single day. If I do not do what I am told, I will be fined or even laid off. What have I done to deserve this? The roads for Falun Gong practitioners have gotten wider and wider. They have so much to do and openly go to Tiananmen Square while the lives for the rest of us are getting more and more tiresome. The roads for the rest of us are getting narrower and narrower."
- A Beijing practitioner went out on the evening of the Chinese New Year's eve and hung 30 Falun Gong banners on the streets. After he was done, he still was not satisfied. So he went home and took two dozen other banners with him. After he finished hanging them up, a policeman saw him and took him to the local police station. He was placed in an iron cage with a double-lock. The next day, the policeman went back to work and was planning to turn the practitioner in for reward money. He was shocked to see that the cage was totally empty - the practitioner had disappeared.
- A Beijing practitioner heard that a certain local police station was especially vicious to Falun Gong practitioners. So, he took some truth-clarifying material to the police station, went inside from the front door, covered the office with the Falun Gong material, and left safely. The practitioner later heard from a policeman, "Just getting by with our assignment is good enough. Why should we be fighting against good people like this? I do not want to be the towel that Jiang Zemin uses to wipe his feet."
- Late at night on Chinese New Year's Day, an elderly gentleman in his 70s wearing a red badge was patrolling the streets, and he was shivering from the cold.
