I sent out this email petition to my colleagues and got a very positive response. My petition letter and one of the responses are attached here.

Petition Letter
Dear friends,
Through the end of December, at least 104 people have been killed during the Chinese government's illegal suppression of people who practice Falun Gong. In addition, over 10,000 Falun Gong practitioners have been sent to labor camps to face beatings and torture.
At least 50,000 have been arrested, and over 600 have been sent to mental hospitals where they have forcibly been given drugs and electric shocks.
You can help improve the situation in China by voicing your support through a Worldwide Petition. Results will be included in reports to international media, human rights organizations and members of Congress. Names will not be disclosed. If you choose, you can remain anonymous. Every response makes a difference!

A Colleague's Response Li, I am shocked and very distressed to hear this terrible news. I will sign the petition and pass it along to everyone in my email address book. ... Please let your fellow practitioners know that there are people here (who are not practitioners) that are extremely disgusted by the inhuman treatment given to those who practice Falun Gong in China. I'm sure the majority of my friends will sign the petition. My heart felt best wishes to you all in the New Year. John
