(The Democratic U.S. Presidential Candidate)
Dear XXX:
Thank you so much for writing me with your views and concerns regarding issues of human rights. I appreciate hearing from you.
Throughout my years in public service, human rights issues have always been important to me. I believe that the United States must sustain efforts to press for worldwide adherence to democratic principles, respect for basic human rights, and the rule of law. As president, working bilaterally and through international institutions. I will fight to promote universal adherence to international standards of human rights, especially for the most vulnerable or traditionally oppressed groups in the world -- women, children, workers, refugees and other persecuted persons. I will also work to strengthen the capacity of the international community to prevent and, whenever possible, stop outbreaks of mass killing and displacement.
As president, I will seek to strengthen international mechanisms that promote human rights and address violations of international humanitarian law, such as the United Nations Human Rights Commission and the international war crimes tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda. I will also strongly support wide ratification of the ILO Convention on the Worst Forms of Child Labor. I will aim to fully implement those international human rights treaties to which the United States is a party. Under my leadership, the United States will continue to speak out against human rights abuses and carry on a human rights discussion with countries willing to engage with us constructively.
