1. The case of Li Jingyun (name changed for protection), female, 35 years old, Shuangma town, Yuetang District, Xiangtan City.
She went to Beijing to protect Dafa in January 2000. She asked a bystander in front of Tiananmen Square for directions to the appeal office. The man asked in return: "Are you a Falun Gong practitioner?" When she answered in the affirmative, he told her to wait there and that someone would be coming shortly to take her to the office. When she got into the car, there were police inside. They immediately began to curse and denigrate her with extremely foul language. She then realized that she had been tricked.
At the police station, they took her basic information, then detained her for half of the day without giving her food or water. She was not allowed to use the washroom either.
She was then extradited to a detention center in her hometown (the town of Shuangma) for 15 days. Only a couple of days went by before she was visited by her hometown police who demanded three things from her:
First, they demanded that she pay a fine of 2,700 Yuan ($350, about 5 months' average salary). Second, she was forbidden to practice Falun Gong. Third, she was required to report to the town government every Monday.
Before long she was visited again by officials from her town government while working at the farmer's market. They took her home, and when she arrived she found quite a scene. There was a huge crowd of around 200 people in front of her house, including neighbors and officials from the town government. When she opened the door, the town officers all rushed into her living room. The vice president of the town Party, Huang Guiqiu, said: "Please read the red-lettered document first, it states that if you try to appeal to the province or to the central government in Beijing, you will be fined. Please pay the fine of 2,700 Yuan that you already owe, I have your receipt ready." Li read it and found the listed items extremely ridiculous. She was being charged 1,100 Yuan just for the food while she was detained. She said: "You know I don't have money. This punishment is completely unreasonable. I will report you to the authorities."
Huang Guiqiu replied: "If you have no money, then you can pay with goods instead. Bring money and I will give you the receipt. It's impossible for Falun Gong to sue us. The court will not accept your case because you practice Falun Gong." Huang Guiqiu then ordered the officials to take Li's possessions as payment. Li's father tried to stop them by saying: "This is our family's livelihood, our family is depending on these items, you cannot take them." A man then shouted: "Move! Take them! Drag the old man to outside." Some people even took the family's rice.
The crowd of neighbors and friends saw the officials taking rice and other goods, and spoke up, saying: "They didn't violate the law. They just learn Falun Gong and try to become good people. It's bad enough that you take their refrigerator, but do you have to take away the rice? She has elderly people and small children at home. She does not have a farm. People haven't behaved like this since ancient times. This is too much!" The officers heard the people's complaints and tried to scare them: "You want to serve terms in jails, too?" After they packed the trunk of their car, they threatened to return to take more if these items were not enough to pay the fine..
On June 25, 2000, Li was arrested and sent to Tiananmen police station after her second appeal in Beijing . She was soon transferred to Shijingshan stadium. She was not allowed to sleep. After two days' stay outdoors with no sleep, she was sent to Pinggu County and was interrogated immediately that night without being allowed to sleep. In a small room, four men took turns beating her for a couple of hours. After having not eaten for days, she could hardly speak after this torture. On July 2, she was transferred back to Shuangma town again and was locked up in an exceptionally filthy cell with criminals. Before long, a man called Wen Hui came in and without any explanation began beating and cursing her filthily. That afternoon, she was transferred to a detention center and was kept there for 15 days. Her family was asked to pay money for her food again and again. However, on the 13th day, without any reason or due process of law, she was sentenced to a criminal detention of 28 days. Her husband was even asked to pay for the gas used by the police to transport her. She was released upon this payment.
After arriving at home, she found that her house had been emptied of all valuable or useful items. The police had robbed her family on July 1 and again on July12, taking their TV, Washer, several sewing machines, the fan, their child's tricycle, and anything else of value.
2. Wang Zhi, male, 51 years old, Shuangma town, Yuetang District, Xiangtan City.
His family (four people in total) went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong during the Chinese New Year's holiday. They were arrested and detained for 28 days because they displayed a Falun Gong banner in Tiananmen Square. His wife was sent to a drug rehabilitation center for 45 days. After they went home, Huang Guiqiu and Tan Yinfu (officials of the town government) brought over 40 people to take their household items, TV set, VCR, etc. They were told that if they went to appeal again, their house would be torn down. In July, when he was working on the farm, some people came to ask him to go home. This time, they held him against the wall and again took his property, which included a new TV set, refrigerator, and a couple of electronic fans, etc. Their lives have become very difficult.
3. Zhao Yun, female, 56 years old, Shuangma town, Yuetang District, Xiangtan City.
She went to appeal in Beijing in February 2000 for the first time and was detained for 30 days. The same officials, Huang Guiqiu and Tan Yinfu, brought many people to their house to take items from their home. The family's refrigerator, sewing machine, and radio etc. were taken. In June of 2000, she went to appeal again and was arrested again. She was sentenced 15 days but on the 13th day, she was sentenced to a criminal detention of 31 days without any reason. On July 1 and 12, her household was emptied of property and the family was told: "She might be sentenced to years in prison." 4. Luo Qianggen, male, 37 years old, Shuangma town, Yuetang District, Xiangtan City.
He was doing Falun Gong exercises in the front of his house on July 26, 1999, and was arrested by police from the town of Shuangma. He was detained for 15 days. The official charge was "disturbing the security of society." In December1999, he went to appeal in Beijing and officials from Shuangma tortured him and tried to intimidate him. They took all his savings (200 Yuan) and sent him to the detention center in Xiangtan City. He was tortured and abused and yelled at by other criminals for two days and endured vile cursing from all the police in the center. In June 2000, he was sentenced to three years in prison by the district court without a trial. He is currently serving this sentence.
5. Wang Yuexun, male, 38 years old, Shuangma town, Yuetang District, Xiangtan City
He went to Beijing to appeal in December 1999 and was arrested in Tiananmen Square. After he was thrown into a police vehicle, the policemen took turns beating him. He lost one of his front teeth and was injured over his entire body. He suffered a lot and was then detained for 7 days. In January 2000, he was arrested again by the district police and detained in the detention center of Xiangtan City without reason and was beaten by other criminals for days. In June 2000, he was sentenced to three and a half years in prison (at the same time and in the same court as Luo Qianggen) by the district court without a trial. He is still serving his jail term now, although he is obviously innocent of any crime.
6. Xu Jinhua, female, 49 years old, Shejian Village, Yuetang District, Xiangtan City
She went to appeal in Beijing in December 1999. She was detained for ten days by the police of Shejian Village, in Yuetang District. She was penalized by being deprived of six months' pension. In June 2000, she went to appeal in Beijing again and was sent to drug rehabilitation center for a 15-day detention by the same police. Later, she was sent to a labor camp by the police of Xiangtan City for three years of "labor education".
7. Xiang Yong, male, 24 years old, Xiangtan City
In January 2000, Xiang went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Dafa. He was beaten brutally at the Xiangtan liaison office in Beijing. Afterwards, he was sent to a detention center by his work unit, and detained there for 40 days. Later, he was detained for 10 more days for doing Falun Gong exercises. At the end of June, he went to Beijing again to appeal. After being arrested and beaten in Tiananmen Square, he was detained at his work unit and then transferred to a detention center. Later, he was sent to Moshipu labor camp in Xinkai, Changsha City for two years of "labor education."
8. Zhang Jie, male, 28 years old, Xiangtan City
In December 1999, he went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Dafa. After he was taken into a police van in Tiananmen Square, the window curtains were pulled down, and four people took turns beating him until he was unable to move. He was then detained for 15 days in his hometown, during which time he was beaten brutally by the police, his hands were cuffed and feet chained. He was released after paying 320 Yuan. He was later taken away and detained for another 15 days without any reason. At the end of April 2000, he tried to go to Beijing to appeal again, but was arrested in Changsha City, Hunan Province, and then he was sent back to Xiangtan City with his thumbs cuffed together. After being kept for four days, he was transferred to a detention center and detained there for 25 days.
9. Liu Chunquan, male, 47 years old, Yuetang District, Xiangtan City
In February 2000, he went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Dafa. At Xiangtan liaison in Beijing, he was beaten brutally by the police. After being handcuffed and sent back to Xiangtan, he was detained there for 30 days. At the end of June 2000, he went to appeal again and was arrested by police who tied him up and beat him. After being detained for 15 days, he was sentenced to "labor education" for two years by the district police.
10. Li Chunmei, female, 36 years old, Bantang town, Yuetang District, Xiangtan City
At the end of June 2000, she went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Dafa. After being sent to Shijingshan Stadium by police from Tiananmen Square, she was not allowed to eat, drink, lie down, or move around. She was forced to bake under the sun at 41 degrees centigrade for two days and was not even allowed to speak. If she dared to speak, she would be severely beaten. She was later sent to Pinggu County (in Beijing) detention center and detained for a few days where she was treated inhumanly. Later, she was transferred to Xiangtan liaison office in Beijing and abused by two directors of the town police station, Long Guomin and Yang Jiao. She was then kept at a drug rehabilitation center for 45 days in Bantang town.
11. Xu Yanjun, female, 25 years old, Xiangtan City
Because of practicing Falun Dafa, she was arrested by the security unit of the Xiangtan Power Plant and sent to a detention center and detained there for 15 days. After being forced to take injections, she was seriously harmed both physically and mentally. After being detained for nearly three months, she was transferred back to her work unit, while being watched by assigned personnel and was fined nearly 10,000 RMB (about $1,200). At the end of June, she went to Beijing to appeal again. After being arrested by the security unit of her work unit, she was sent to a detention center and detained there for 15 days. She was then detained for 15 more days for refusing to write a letter of guarantee denouncing Falun Dafa. She was later transferred to Xiangtan Detention Center and detained for more than 30 days and fined over 3,000 RMB (about $360). Now, she has been sent to a labor camp for "labor education" in Zhuzhou City.
12. Cheng Linghui, female, 62 years old, in Wanren Village, Xiangtan City
She used to have hyperthyroidism, heart diseases and leukemia. After practicing Falun Dafa, she recovered from all these illnesses, and benefited in both her body and mind. During the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), she went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Dafa. Later, she was detained for 18 days, then kept at a drug rehabilitation center for over 10 days. She was later sentenced to one year of "labor education" for going to Beijing to appeal again. She is now being kept at Baimalong women's labor camp in Zhuzhou City.
13. Zeng Guangzhong, male, 37 years old, Xiangtan City
He is an associate professor in Library Sciences Department of Xiangtan Industrial College in Xiangtan City, Hunan Province. In late March 2000, he went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Dafa and was detained there for 15 days. In late June, he went to Beijing to appeal again. In a detention center in Beijing, he was forced by four prisoners in his room to stand naked in a basin of cold water. A towel that was used to wipe the floor was stuffed into his mouth, and cold water was continually poured down his body from his head until his whole body shivered with cold. He was later forced to drink a lot of scalding hot water. He was sent to Xinkaipu in Changsha City for "labor education" in July 2000. On August 14, 2000, he was forced to go back to Xiangtan Industrial College, where he was reprimanded and humiliated in public. He is now being kept at Xinkaipu labor camp in Changsha City.
14. Zhou Yu, male, 36 years old, Xiangtan City
He is a teacher at the No. 1 Professional College in Xiangtan, Hunan Province. In October 1999, he was detained for ten days for doing Falun Gong exercises outside. During the Spring Festival, he went to Beijing to validate Dafa by presenting a banner in Tiananmen Square. He was detained at Sanjiaoping Detention Center in Xiangtan for one month. Eight days after being released, he was taken away by police without any reason and sentenced to "labor education" for one and a half years without trial. He is now being kept at Xinkaipu labor camp in Changsha City.
15. Liu Liyan, male, 49 years old, Hutan Village, Xiangtan City
He went to Beijing to appeal for Dafa three times. After being sent back the third time, he was kept at a drug rehabilitation center where the other prisoners beat him every day. Ten days later, he was taken away by police for reading a Dafa book outside and he was sent to a labor camp. He is now being kept at Xinkaipu labor camp in Changsha City.
16. Zhao Yunqing, male, over 50 years old, Yaowan, Xiangtan City
When he went to Bejing to appeal for Dafa the second time, he was taken to the police station near Zhongnanhai, Beijing. He was slapped and beaten by four policemen. After being forced to the ground with his throat clutched, they stamped down on his head. He was then beaten and shocked with an electric baton for a long time as well as being drenched with cold water. After being sent back to Xiangtan, he was detained for 15 days, and later transferred into cell 18 of the Sanjiaoping Detention Center. The other prisoners in his cell beat his back with their shoes until he lost consciousness. Later, the prisoners hit his toes with their shoes, causing severe pain. He was also beaten many times on the waist and one of his ribs was seriously injured.
17. Xiao Zhixiang, male, 62 years old, Xiangtan City
He retired from Xiangtan Coal Gas Plant. In October, he was detained for 15 days for doing exercises outside with other practitioners. During the Spring Festival, he went to Beijing appealing for Falun Gong. He has been detained since February 25, 2000. Being suspected of being an "organizer," he was formally arrested on April 4 and charged with serious crimes. He has been detained since then.
18. Liang Hui, 30 years old, went to appeal three times and went on a hunger strike for 10 days while being detained.
