Since the Communist Party first came to power in China, withholding information from the
Chinese public and the world has been a long-standing practice. Nationwide cover-ups of
potentially embarassing incidents have always been carried out under the mantra of
"preserving social stability". The most recent one is the systematic torture and
murder of Falun Gong practitioners. The outbreak of the SARS epidemic, would have gone unnoticed
if not for its widespread international impact.
