April 20 was the birthday of Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zhang Lianying. It also marked one month since she suffered severe internal bleeding in the head after being brutally beaten at the Beijing Women's Labor Camp. Ms. Zhang's husband Niu Jinping and her three-year-old daughter Qingqing repeatedly went to the labor camp to try to visit Ms. Zhang, who is detained at the Tiantanghe Hospital inside the labor camp. The labor camp is located at 12 Weiyong Road, Tiantanghe, Huangcun Township, Daxing District, Beijing. Mr. Niu again requested that Ms. Zhang be released unconditionally, and that the perpetrator of the crime be brought to justice.

They waited from morning until after noon, yet the labor camp refused their visitation request. Qingqing had a piece of case that she brought to her mother for her birthday.
With no other solution, Mr. Niu held Qingqing in front of the gate of the labor camp and clarified the facts about the persecution to family members of those detained in the labor camp who were waiting for their visitation time. He spoke of how Zhang Lianying's physical and mental health both benefited from practicing Falun Gong, how she became a more considerate person, and how she was persecuted because she believed in Truth, Compassion, and Tolerance.
Zhang Lianying, 46, is a university graduate. She was an official with the China Everbright Group and a registered accountant. She lived at 2-203, 7th Building, Liufangnanli, Chaoyang District, Beijing. She began practicing Falun Gong in August 1997. From then on until July 1999, she practiced diligently. Everyone around her, from her boss to her coworkers, all said that she had changed to a new person. She was healthier, and was more willing to take on difficult tasks at work. The officials of subsidiary companies under Everbright saw that since Zhang began practicing Falun Gong, she set high requirements for herself and refused many gifts or bribes. They said, "We now know how capable Falun Gong is!" One accounting staff said, "If all company officials learned Falun Gong, things would be much better." During these two years, all Zhang Lianying's chronic diseases were cured. She did not take one day of sick leave during that time.
From practicing Falun Gong, Zhang understood the true purpose and meaning of life. She followed the standards of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance. When her workplace was assigning housing, she had the qualification to obtain a large unit of over 120 square meters (1,290 square feet). However, she treated herself as a practitioner and gave the unit to another coworker who needed it more. She lived in a small unit just over 40 square meters (430 square feet) in size.
In her article "The Path Returning Home," (/emh/articles/2002/4/21/21205.html) Zhang wrote, "However, on the night of July 20, 1999, everything turned around. My supervisor laid me off in order to investigate me and forced me to turn in my Falun Gong books. I couldn't understand it. I was still me. One day there was praise everywhere. The next day I was cast down, never to get up!"
During the eight years of brutal persecution, Zhang has been tortured and persecuted many times. On June 14, 2005, when Zhang was at home with her baby girl, who was still nursing, she was taken away by more than ten policemen from Xiangheyuan Police Substation of Chaoyang District. The police broke into her home. She was sentenced to serve in a labor camp. She was tortured at both the Assignment Center of the Beijing Labor Camp and the Beijing Women's Labor Camp. In the last several months, she was detained at the Central Training League of the Women's Labor Camp. The Central Training League is the most vicious in the labor camp. All the detainees there are put in two-square-meter (21.5 square feet) cells with no windows. They have to eat, drink urinate, and defecate there. The convicted criminals, under the encouragement of the guards, often beat Zhang brutally. They acted like beasts to torture her. They tied a rope around her neck so tight that she almost suffocated. Then they punched her head, while keeping the rope tight. Because Zhang refused to wear the labor camp's uniform, insisted on her hunger strike, and repeatedly said out loud, "Falun Dafa is great," they tortured her with this method for a total of nine times. Twice, she was chocked so severely that she wet her pants.
On the morning of March 20, while being chocked, Zhang Lianying was again beaten severely in the head by a few inmates under the guards' instructions. She was in a coma and was sent to Renhe Hospital in Beijing. The warden of the labor camp tried to cover up the real reason of her internal bleeding in the head. The doctors said, "Zhang Lianying's bleeding affects a large area and is very serious. It would take about 12 days to stabilize her condition. In addition, there is some stagnant blood that was difficult to clear out. This could lead to other problems, such as paralysis or epilepsy."
Despite the doctors' diagnosis, Beijing Women's Labor Camp discreetly moved Zhang, who was still in critical condition, to Tiantanghe Hospital inside the Beijing Women's Labor Camp. In addition, the Beijing Women's Labor Camp also rejected several requests by Zhang's family members for her release.
When the people waiting outside of the Women's Labor Camp heard what Niu Jinping said, they were all shocked.
The guards at the Beijing Women's Labor Camp closed all gates out of guilt. They tried to block Niu Jinping and his daughter from entering the labor camp. Niu Jinping made a strong case to meet with the director of the labor camp. It wasn't until noon that a staff person told Niu that the director would meet with him on May 18.
The long delay before the meeting with the director of the
labor camp causes concern. Zhang's family members suspect that more bad
things are being planned against Zhang.

Mudanjiang Forced Labor Camp is located in Sidao Village, Tielinghe Town, in the eastern suburb of Mudanjiang City. Zhang Junrong, group leader responsible for the entry and release of prisoners in the forced labor camp, used electric batons to abuse prisoners. Between 1999 and 2002, during his tenure as a group leader, he followed the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and persecuted Falun Gong practitioners ruthlessly.
Toward the end of 1999, four practitioners were sent to Zhang's group in Mudanjiang Forced Labor Camp. Zou Xianbao, director of Heilongjiang Province Labor Camp Bureau, went to Mudanjiang Forced Labor Camp to talk with practitioners, and at the same time assigned persecution tasks to several individuals: labor camp deputy head Zhao Guanying, management section head Ma Libiao, education (brainwashing) section head Zhang Zhennan, deputy section head Yan Changhai, group head Zhang Junrong, political instructor Li Longyu, and others.
Zou Xianbao also dispatched guards from the Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp, known for its ruthless persecution of Falun Gong practitioners, to Mudanjiang Forced Labor Camp to teach the guards there more insidious methods of persecuting practitioners. Politics and Law Committee secretary Li Chun, who is in charge of the persecution in Mudanjiang City, arrived at the labor camp immediately, to support these guards. Zhang Junrong, Zhao Guanlin, Ma Libiao and others schemed to get a promotion and bonus from persecuting the practitioners. Zhao Guanying participated very actively in this and was later promoted to be the director of the labor camp.
Zhang Junrong assigned his favorite prisoners as a "hook" to monitor practitioners 24 hours a day, and also let them participate in the persecution of practitioners. Those prisoners whom the guards protect are called "hooks." The guards have a loose restriction on "hooks" for their daily lives and sentence reduction. They also use them to manage other prisoners; in addition, the guards give them the "privilege" of extorting money from prisoners and beating prisoners. In return, the "hooks" share whatever they can extort with the guards. This amounts to a relationship between gangsters - protect and be protected, provide and be provided for. The guards' appetites were huge, so big the supply from these "hooks" couldn't satisfy their needs. Therefore, these "hooks" used all available methods to extort whatever they could from the prisoners under their control.
Zhang Junrong is one example. There were three cell heads in the cell. Every day, each of them had to provide him with a pack of cigarettes worth 10 yuan. When it came to a holiday, they had to provide him with a carton of cigarettes containing 10 packs. If Zhang Junrong worked the late shift, the "hooks" also had to provide his food. Having Zhang Junrong as "an advanced model guard," the people working under him would unscrupulously extort anything from the prisoners. In addition, the "hooks" used any method they could think of to torture the prisoners to make them demand money and things from their families to satisfy the "hooks" and the guards, in exchange for fewer beatings and less abuse. All the prisoners' families had been forced to send more money, which eventually went to Zhang Junrong and his colleagues.
By that time, a prisoner in the 4th Group had a family visit. The family gave him several hundred yuan when they came to see him. Just for this amount of money, the "hooks" beat him until breaking his bones. The camp officials eventually did nothing but add a couple of months to the sentence of the prisoners who joined the beating; they did nothing to compensate the victim.
It is not difficult to imagine the hard times experienced by the four practitioners who were illegally detained in this labor camp. Zhang Junrong used different methods to persecute each practitioner. One example is Mr. Song Yan, an unemployed worker. Because Mr. Song's family refused to cooperate with the guards to aid in "reforming" him, they tortured him with verbal abuse and beatings. Another practitioner, Mr. Jing Youfeng, had been a gym instructor at Mudanjiang Normal University. Because his wife Jiang Chunmei was also arrested and put in the Mudanjing Forced Labor Camp, practitioner Zhu Xiuchen had to take their young child to his home and take care of him. The couple didn't have family members who could visit. The guards beat Mr. Jing in front of everyone and took every chance to torture him. Zhang Junrong would beat Mr. Jing personally each time Mr. Jing closed his eyes. Zhang Junrong jumped on him, slapped his face, punched and kicked him.
Whenever Zhang Junrong was on duty, he would watch the four practitioners. If he saw anything he didn't like, he would beat Song Yan and Jing Youfeng. One of the two other practitioners, Yu Bo, was a leasing manager who had worked in the Zhaoshang Plaza (Merchandise Company) in Mudanjiang; the other one is Yu Zhonghai, a designer who had worked for Mudanjiang Library. Since neither of their families knew the truth and cooperated with the guards, the guards used their families to persuade them, and they also ordered the "hooks" to beat them. Furthermore, the "hooks" were told to monitor the practitioners' every word and action and report to the guards in a timely manner.
Zhang Junrong ordered "hook" He Peihua to torture Mr. Yu Bo.
The abusers forced him to sit in the double lotus position for about 20
hours, forbidding him to move the whole time. If Mr. Yu moved a little
bit, He Peihua would beat him. The next day, Mr. Yu couldn't walk. A
few days later, he developed lower body edema and became paralyzed. For
having done all these bad deeds, so He Peihua was released ahead of his
term.
Zhang Junrong used a beguiling way to treat practitioner Mr. Yu Zhonghai. By all appearances, he regarded him highly. Mr. Yu Zhonghai was good at art design and specialized in painting. The art design work (graphics) in the labor camp was dependent on him. Sometimes he had to work all night to finish the work. Zhang Junrong covertly ordered "hooks" Sun Shaokun and Li Honghai to monitor Mr. Yu Zhonghai's speech and behavior.
Later on, "hook" Li Honghai was sent to the Industry Team where Mr. Song Yan was being held by that time. Li Honghai assigned Mr. Song the worst place to sleep. He had to sleep on one side of his body as there was no room for him to turn around. The night made him more tired than the day. Mr. Song was often beaten and otherwise abused by Zhang Junrong. Li Honghai would beat him once more after Zhang Junrong's abuse. Li Honghai also incited other prisoners to watch Mr. Song and found any excuse to beat him. Li Honghai was released before his sentence had expired. Mr. Song Yan, however, had been tortured so severely that he was weaker than before.
After Zhang Junrong had beaten Mr. Jing Youfeng and Mr. Song Yan, he couldn't raise his arms. He would stop the beatings, but once he didn't feel any pain in his arms, he would start again.
After 2005, Mudanjiang Forced Labor Camp officials transferred all the Falun Gong practitioners to the Suihua Forced Labor Camp in Heilongjiang to continue the persecution. Mudanjiang Forced Labor Camp no longer detains practitioners.

Officials at Tilanqiao Prison in Shanghai have transferred the majority of Falun Gong practitioners from the 5th Group, which detained only practitioners, to other groups. Several steadfast practitioners, including Zhou Bin, Qu Yanlai, and Du Ting, are still detained in the 5th Group, the so-called "youth experimental team."
Prior to the Chinese New Year of 2007, Tilanqiao Prison officials made a major shift of practitioners and at the same time put more practitioners in prison. Since practitioners are detained at several places, it is difficult to obtain an accurate number at present. Based on incomplete statistics, about one hundred practitioners are held in all the detention centers in Shanghai.
A guard from Tilanqiao Prison said, "We won't release anyone unless he or she is dying." That means they won't release anyone unless they are sure that the person's health condition is hopeless, so that they can avoid taking the responsibility for someone's death.
Practitioner Mr. Xiong Wenqi was barely breathing when he was released for medical treatment in 2005. The guards had instructed inmates to take turns beating Mr. Xiong every day.
Not long ago, Tilanqiao Prison officials sent new practitioner Mr. Chen Jun to a hospital for medical treatment after he was beaten to near death. Mr. Chen died soon after he left the prison.
Practitioner Mr. Qiu Kun was illegally sentenced to nine years in prison. It was recently said that he has late stage cirrhosis of the liver. The prison officials released him for outside medical treatment only after learning this.
Practitioner Mr. Du Ting has been on a hunger strike and his physical condition has been very bad recently. He could not even walk unaided. Even though the guards also said that his body organs were very weak, his wife was forbidden to see him, and he was not allowed to undergo outside medical treatment.
Practitioner Mr. Qu Yanlai is also on a hunger strike. Since the prison is afraid of outside pressure, he can still do the exercises in the prison. However, during this Chinese New Year, guards handcuffed and transferred him. His current whereabouts are unknown.
Practitioner Mr. Lan Bing has high-blood pressure and a retina disease. Pathological changes in the retina can cause the retina to fall off and a loss of vision. His family is very worried about him.
Practitioner Mr. Wang Jianping is detained and severely
persecuted in the 1st Group. His condition is bad and he is very
sick due to long-term imprisonment. Tilanqiao Prison guards tried to
entrap him. They said he could receive outside medical treatment as
long as he agreed to write a so-called guarantee
statement, otherwise he could not go.
Ms. Ye Xiujuan is a teacher. In 2000, she was illegally arrested for distributing truth-clarifying materials and detained at the Mancheng County Detention Center where she was tortured for 80 days. Immediately on the second day at the detention center, Ms. Ye was told to do manual labor. When she refused to cooperate, the Deputy Director of the detention center, Jia Ruiqing, pulled and pushed her around, while several guards shouted, "Handcuff her if she refuses!" Then, they cuffed Ms. Ye's hands behind her back and to an iron bar. She was only released from this position after she lost consciousness.
At the detention center, Ms. Ye was forced to work every day picking dried peppers from morning until lunch time. Due to poor ventilation, people often sneezed and had sore throats from smelling and inhaling the dry and dusty peppers. The workload was exceedingly high. One time, when Ms. Ye protested the workload, a guard named Li hit her on the arms and legs with a wooden stick. As a result, she had a purple blister on her arm and multiple bruises on her legs. At night, Ms. Ye could not sleep or let anything touch her legs due to the severe pain from the beatings. Two other Falun Gong practitioners were also tortured for their beliefs. They had bruises all over their legs from being beaten. Guard Li would hit their feet with an object when they fell down. As a result, their feet became so swollen that they could not put on their shoes.
One time, Ms. Ye shouted, "Falun Dafa is Good! Restore My Teacher's
Reputation."
The guards then locked her in a small cage under the baking sun. Boards were put around her neck, and her hands were cuffed behind her back. She could not stand or move and could only sit in the cage. However, she continued to shout, "Falun Dafa is Good!" She wanted all the people there to know that Falun Gong and Mastrer Li were being defamed. The guards continuously slapped her face until her mouth and gums started to bleed.
When some people saw how Ms. Ye was treated, they were very sympathetic. Ms. Ye would clarify the truth to them. As a result, the guards and other inmates would beat her more. They also cursed her. Among the perpetrators were guard Li and Jia Ruiqing. When Ms. Ye was finally released at lunch time, her face was very swollen and painful.
Ms. Ye went on a hunger strike to protest the unjust persecution. The guards then brutally forced-fed her. When she refused to cooperate, Jia Ruiqing dragged Ms. Ye from her cell to the courtyard and started beating her. When Ms. Ye fell to the ground, Jia grabbed one of her shoes and used it to hit her face. Jia Ruiqing continued to hit Ms. Ye's face several dozen times. Afterwards, she told several inmates to cuff Ms. Ye's hands behind her back. Then they held Ms. Ye down onto the ground by pulling her hair and stepping on her legs. Jia Ruiqing then forcefully inserted a feeding tube into Ms. Ye's throat, all the while she kept on hitting and cursing Ms. Ye. She also claimed that they were trying to be kind. Sometimes when Ms. Ye was forced-fed, guard Li would use a club to hit her ankles until they became swollen and purple in color.
After the forced-feeding, they kept the feeding tube inside Ms. Ye's throat, while her hands were still cuffed behind her back. Ms. Ye was in a lot of pain and she could not lie down to sleep at night. She could only sleep squatting or sitting down. She could not clean, feed, or relieve herself without others' help. She was tortured like this for over ten consecutive days.
One day, Ms. Ye was able to get the feeding tube out. When Jia Ruiqing found out, she viciously beat Ms. Ye. As a result, Ms. Ye was covered with bruises. She was force-fed for 46 straight days. Her weight dropped from 127 lb (58kg) to 87 lb (39.5 kg). She was often beaten and cuffed at the detention center.
During the 80 days that she was detained, not only was Ms. Ye
subjected
to inhumane tortures, her family also suffered at home. At that time,
her child was only 5 years old. He often cried for her and refused to
sleep at night. His grandparents could not calm him down and his father
was saddened when he saw his son cry and ask for his mother. When the
persecution began in 1999, many people were deceived by the state
propaganda lies spread by the Chinese Communist Party about Falun Gong.
As a result, Ms. Ye's husband kept quiet and to himself at work and
endured many torments.
Mr. Jiang Deting from Liaoyang County, Liaoning Province was sentenced to 18 months of forced labor for upholding his belief in Falun Gong. He was brutally tortured, but the police tried to arrest him again and take him to a brainwashing center after his term ended. Mr. Jiang has been forced to leave home to avoid being further mistreated.
In May 2001, Mr. Jiang Deting was arrested by a group of people who stormed in his home in Jiangjunfang Village, Xiaobeihe Town, Liaoyang City. They took him to Liaoyang County Detention Center, had him sentenced to 18 months of forced labor, and imprisoned him in Liaoyang County Shizuizi Forced Labor Camp. This group of perpetrators includes Village CCP Secretary Cui Xuezhong (male), Village Security Chair Ren Youwei (male), Women's Association Chair Zhuang Suyan (female), Police Station Head Zhang Dalin (male), Police Station CCP Head Liu En (male), police officers Xu Anliang and Jiang Naike, and Xiaobeihe Town Head Gao Jinlin (male).
More than thirty practitioners were detained in Shizuizi Forced Labor Camp, more than ten of whom were from Liaoyang County. The rest were from Tieling City. They were forced to do heavy labor. Mr. Jiang weighed less than 100 pounds, but he was forced to carry cement powder to the eight floor. Once, he was forced to carry more than twenty bags to the fourth floor, which caused his neck to start bleeding. On one occasion, Sixth Ward guard Zhao Ting (male) kicked Mr. Jaing down to the floor and said Mr. Jiang was too slow. The Shizuizi Camp Administration tried to destroy practitioners' resilience through heavy labor.
In November 2002, Mr. Jiang Deting's term ended. Guards tried to force him to write a guarantee statement to give up cultivating, but they failed. One guard from Dengta City repeatedly kicked Mr. Jiang. After Mr. Jiang returned home, officers from the Town and Village officials constantly went to his home to harass him and try to force him to give up cultivating.
In August 2006, the CCP Director of Xiaohebei Town Police Station Liu En (male) and police officer Zhang (male, first name unknown) led five or six 610 Office officers to storm into Mr. Jiang's home; they were planning to take him to a brainwashing center. Mr. Jiang refused to go, but the police wouldn't give up. They even followed him to the restroom. Mr. Jiang escaped with wisdom and has had to leave home to avoid further persecution.
